Intensifier pump is the earliest and most commonly used technology in the field of waterjet cutting. The intensifier pump uses the "pressurization principle" to pressurize the water. The "pressurization principle" uses the area difference between the piston head/plunger to pressurize, that is, increase the pressure. First, the hydraulic oil is pressurized, and the piston head is pushed by the low pressure oil. The surface area of the piston head is 20 times that of the high pressure plunger, and the plunger is responsible for pushing the water. This increases the pressure by 20 times. For example, an oil pressure of 3,000 psi will produce a water pressure of 60,000 psi because the piston head/plunger area ratio is 20:1.
The intensifier oil pump is driven by oil pressure to form a larger pressure, and the oil pump forms an ultra-high pressure, so the accessories are generally made of hard metal materials, and the failure rate during use is relatively low. The water jet of the intensifier oil pump is the most widely used type of water jet intensifier.
In terms of pressure, the pressure of the intensifier oil pump is generally higher than that of the direct drive pump, so it can cut thicker metal materials and has a wider range of applications. Although the water jet of the direct drive pump can’t form such a high pressure, it can be used in ceramic tiles. Cutting, food, and cleaning operations are more cost-effective.
In terms of cost, the water jet of the pressurized oil pump will require greater consumption. Ultra-high pressure operation requires almost 30 degrees of electricity per hour. The monthly electricity consumption is also very huge, while the direct drive pump type is very economical, every hour. About ten kilowatt-hours of electricity, only one-third of the cost of the supercharged oil pressure type. In addition, the cost of equipment, hydraulic intensifier is also much higher than the cost of direct drive pump equipment.
